Mazunte, Mexico I 2023

A limited edition is the fixed number of copies for one individual artwork indicating how often it exists worldwide. Each print comes with a Certification of Authenticity hand signed by the artist.

This is a cave of rocks located in Mazunte, Oaxaca. Although this scene is not from my hometown, there is something in it that evokes the concept of origin. Mazunte, whose name comes from the Nahuatl maxotetia, meaning “please, deposit eggs here,” is a place with strong symbolic significance. Historically, it has been a nesting site for sea turtles, a natural sanctuary where life begins its cycle. This direct relationship with birth, with the instinct to protect, incubate, and rebirth, turns this landscape into much more than just a destination: it transforms it into a metaphor. The cave, with its enveloping, mineral shape, reminds me of a stone womb, a primitive and sacred refuge. Standing before that image is like looking inward. It is an invitation to return to the wild, to what shaped us before the world named us.

Meet Gabriela Alatorre

Gabriela Alatorre is a Mexican visual artist based in Berlin. She develops her practice as a photographer, film director, and art mediator.

At times, her images evoke a raw, latent intensity; at others, peaceful beauty emerges. Through intimate moments and staged scenes, she plays with visual seductiveness to explore both political and personal situations related to identity, memory, and the body from a decolonial perspective.

As the founder of Habitar la Imagen, an initiative operating between Mexico and Berlin, Gabriela fosters self-representation through visual arts, offering women a space to rethink collective knowledge, reclaim control over their own image, and reshape their narratives.
