Studio Sana Benzaitar

Based in Marrakesh, Studio Sana Benzaitar is a Moroccan rug brand founded by Sana Benzaitar and run by her sister, Raja. With an entirely female workforce, their luxurious, simplistic Ben Mrirt rugs are knotted by families of weavers across the Middle Atlas Mountains using locally sourced wool and traditional vegetable dyes. They are committed to ethical production and honoring the artistry of this Amazigh / Berber craft.

Meet Sana & Raja Benzaitar

The daughters of a renowned rug merchant, Sana and Raja Benzaiter grew up immersed in the bustling rug trade of Marrakesh. After studying Business, Energy and Environment, Sana was ultimately back to her roots, inspired by the Amazigh artisans she encountered. Inspired by these traditional techniques, Sana founded Studio Sana Benzaitar with the hopes of bringing more women into the trade. The Studio is now run by her sister Raja, who took over after her sister´s passing. Raja, herself a trained civil engineer, has also immersed herself in interior design, and focusing on the longevity and sustainability of the studio.

Story & Highlights

FOUNDER: Sana Benzaitar
TEAM: 100% female
LOCATION: Marrakesh, Morocco
MATERIALS: Premium wool from the Middle Atlas Mountains

The process begins in the Middle Atlas Mountains, where sheep are shorn seasonally. The wool is washed, carded, brushed into softness, drawn into threads, then dyed naturally using plants.

It is then passed along to the Amazigh artisans in Mrirt, a collective of mothers and daughters weavers who, knot by knot, create the beautiful tapistries that hold the stories of where they come from and who has made them. These women learn from each other, and share in the process of design: each Studio Sana Benzaitar rug is a product of collaboration.
