Founded in 2016 by Volodymyr Benedychuk, Basny is a Kiyv-based rug design brand focused on preserving the northern Ukrainian cultural of weaving. Whimsical in nature, the brand works with local artists and weavers to showcase a blend contemporary and traditional design.
A Kyiv-based artist, Volodymyr Benedychuk moved to the Carpathian region to create what he calls a 'cultural residence.' There he encountered the traditional weaving techniques of the Hutsults, as well as a drive to support the local community. With the help of his friend Nadiia Puchkina, Basny Rugs was founded in support of this community and craft. They often host residencies with local artists, whose designs inspired by the region are featured on the Basny rugs.

Production takes place in the village of Yavoriv, the center of Ukrainian rug production in the Carpathian Mountains. Rug weaving is one of the main traditions of 'hutsul,' a sustainable method of production that inspired the founding of Basny. As well as being sustainable, 'hutsul' focuses of local and community support, using local wool from sheep farmers in the region.
'Lizhnyk' or rug weaving, occurs on wooden looms called 'krosny.' Two main types of rugs with geomatric patterns are woven, ‘killim’ and `leashnyk.' The 'leashnyk' is the fluffy wool rug, which can be used on the bed, on the floor or hang on the wall for thermal insulation. The 'killim' is a shorter pile and more typically used as a rug.
