Etnodim is a Kyiv-based clothing brand founded in 2009 by Andriy Cherukha. Their signature embroidered fabrics fuse cultural narratives with contemporary design, with each piece inspired by Ukrainian history, art, and literature. Each work of embroidery is meticulously researched and crafted with meaning. They seek to create ornaments that celebrate Ukrainian tradition and culture.
Andriy Cherukha is a Ukrainian cultural scholar who became immersed in traditional craft communities of tailors and seamstresses during his studies. He became inspired to show these embroidered designs to the world, creating an e-commerce platform. They soon transitioned into making their own designs, assembling a team of designers in Kyiv who are equally as committed to the narrative nature of embroidery.

Dating back to prehistoric times, the tradition of embroidery originated as belief in protective, sacred and even mystical symbols. Influenced by religion, the Byzantine Empire, and significantly the Cossacks, a group of Slavic, Orthodox Christians in Eastern Ukraine, designs have altered and evolved.
Most commonly is the traditional Vyshyvanka, an embroidered shirt that serves as a talisman for Ukrainian culture. Patterns are often placed around openings like the collar and cuffs to guard against harm, and certain motifs were thought to bring luck or ward off evil. Techniques and meanings were passed down through generations, making each Vyshyvanka both a cultural and personal artifact.
Each embroidered motif on a Vyshyvanka carries specific symbolic meaning rooted in Ukrainian tradition. Common elements include sun symbols for life and energy, geometric patterns for protection and balance, and plant motifs for strength and continuity. Today, it remains an important symbol of Ukrainian identity and heritage.
In staying with this tradition, Etnodim develops their embroidered designs through historical research that evokes specific stories and symbols from Ukrainian culture. Due to the complexity of the embroidery work, it can take up to ten months for a single shirt to be produced, from inception to finished product.
The team is made up of over 100 designers, folklorists, art managers, artists, and ethnographers. After the Russian invasion escalated in 2022, craftspeople from eastern regions under occupation, like Kharkiv and Luhansk, moved to Kyiv and joined the brand, bringing their skills and personal stories into the studio’s vyshyvankas.
