Hamaji

Hamaji, meaning "nomad" in coastal Swahili, is a Kenyandesigner collection founded in 2017 by designer Louise Sommerlatte. The brand is built around preserving ancient textile traditions and nomadic craftsmanship while empowering small-scale artisans across Africa.

Rooted in the principles of sustainability and conscious consumerism, Hamaji creates collections from natural fibres, botanical dyes, handcraft, embroidery, and up-cycled vintage textiles. Inspired by East African charm, the brand embodies a spirit of nomadic femininity through pastel hues, free-flowing silhouettes, and a refined sense of elegance.

Hamaji's studio is based in Kilifi, Kenya, nestled under a big fig tree amongst local designers and Kenyan creatives at the Food Movement on Kilifi Plantations. The brand's philosophy is captured in Sommerlatte's vision: each Hamaji piece is intended to be a true treasure to its owner, evoking a harmony of culture and a symphony of wandering threads, each carrying its own nomadic story and heritage.
