Braiding is more than just an aesthetic practice: it is an act of affection, an intimate gesture of care and connection. Whether in the hair of women or in the manes of horses, the braid represents a way of speaking without words, a gesture that unites, protects, and beautifies. Both wear braids not as adornment, but as a symbol. The braid may fall, but it does not surrender. It intertwines, just as stories and shared struggles do. This ancient gesture is also echoed in the female portrait, where a friend wears two braids that fall like soft swords over her torso. They are beautiful, but also strong. They are delicate, but not fragile. The braid is a root: a thread that connects with the grandmother, the mother, the sister; a woven language that passes through generations. It is a sign of belonging. In the indigenous communities of Mexico, the braid has been a symbol of resistance, community, and pride. Braiding is not just about grooming: it is about remembering, caring, and accompanying. Thus, between the mare and the woman, there is an invisible thread that unites them. It is the same loving act of holding, of ordering chaos, of intertwining strength with beauty.

Meet Gabriela Alatorre

Gabriela Alatorre is a Mexican visual artist based in Berlin. She develops her practice as a photographer, film director, and art mediator.

At times, her images evoke a raw, latent intensity; at others, peaceful beauty emerges. Through intimate moments and staged scenes, she plays with visual seductiveness to explore both political and personal situations related to identity, memory, and the body from a decolonial perspective.

As the founder of Habitar la Imagen, an initiative operating between Mexico and Berlin, Gabriela fosters self-representation through visual arts, offering women a space to rethink collective knowledge, reclaim control over their own image, and reshape their narratives.
