Story & Highlights
FOUNDER: Marisa Fuentes Prado
LOCATION: Peru/Germany
MATERIALS: Alpaca and sheep wool, recycled silver 950, Pima and organic cotton, Tencel - sustainable wood fiber, and viscose
Maqu pursued GOTS certification for its organic cotton and Tencel/Lyocell, a fabric derived from wood and hemp. Local and traditional wool farming methods are employed to circumvent grassland destruction, with wool harvesting guided by shepherd families. This commitment to sustainability results in the release of small series in Maqu's production lines.
In line with Maqu's values, the company is on a plastic-free mission, ensuring that all deliveries are made in recycled paper boxes by GoGreen. Maqu's Alpaca wool is acquired with ease and gentleness, capitalizing on the calm and friendly nature of alpacas. The harvesting process is conducted with sensitivity, treating the animals as part of the extended Maqu family, each even having names. This traditional agricultural approach, largely unchanged in the Andes for millennia, allows Maqu's herds to roam freely, preventing damage to grasslands and erosion.
