"10 years ago, during a photo shoot in Spain, I found a small homeless dog looking for food. I gave him the name "Tschikko Leopold von Werner" and took him back to Germany. From the first day I noticed that he looked like a lion with his bright eyes and the color of his hair. I made him a mane and started taking portraits of him in various places in my adopted home of Hamburg. Now Tschikko Leopold von Werner is conquering the city as the famous GROSSSTADTLÖWE (english translation: big city lion)." - Julia Marie Werner

"Girls can design, drive, repair and photograph cars just as boys can. A girl can do everything exactly as a boy can. Good, successful, go-get-it girls prove they’re just like boys. – stop! – What?? Who says girls have to prove they’re the same as anyone who is not like them? A girl photographs cars with her eyes, her emotions, her creativity. Just because that does not look like the photos of photographer Y, who has already rocked off X – Mercedes and BMW campaigns, does not mean it ’s not relevant. Are not over 50% of potential customers women? Should not at least as much advertising be created by women as well? Because I’m a girl‘ means to me, taking photos of things I see because I’m who I am, not because I want them to look like the latest campaign of other men. And yet, the temptation is always great to fit into a known scheme. Do not appear too soft, don´t show too much emotion or speak too high. Actually it should read ‚Because I am who I am‘, but ‚girl‘ describes me well enough." - Julia Marie Werner

Tamil Nadu, India I 2017 - Chariots of Frolic #1 'Kumaresan'

About the artists inspiration: "I vividly recall walking the streets of Arni, Tamil Nadu on a sweltering hot evening, temperatures here can touch 45 degrees Cº in the summer. I was on assignment to document the lives of Sari weaving artisans in this town that has become a cost-effective production outpost for the famous Kanchipuram sari. The sound of the looms I was around all day, was still ringing in my ears when I encountered my first chariot of frolic – loosely translated from its Tamil name “Ullasa ratham”."

A curious juxtaposition of the medieval and postmodern, the vehicle was essentially an iconic Fiat Premier-Padmini car modified to resemble a chariot. Anandan, the chariot’s driver informed me that his duty for the night was to pick up a bride and groom from a nearby Ganesha temple and drive them to their wedding reception hall.

An embodiment of Indian jugaad, these vehicles are spectacles of low-cost innovation. They are fabricated using discarded cars sold at scrap prices that are no longer in production. Fabricators then remove the rear seat to accommodate an elevated platform on which a sofa or chairs are placed for the bride and the groom to facilitate a wedding reception on wheels. The platform has an ornate background referred to locally as a ‘disco’ which is made of papier-mâché decoration around a fiberboard housing LED or tungsten bulbs. The lighting is powered by a generator tucked away in the trunk of the car.

The vehicles are photographed at night to accentuate its most unique feature –the ‘disco’. Considering they are usually observed in crowded processions, I consciously presented these cars devoided of human presence. The quiet settings are a tranquil remnant of the chaotic celebrations that the vehicles facilitated.

My skin bares the weight of generations of trauma, violence, love, forgiveness, and wisdom. I am the product of an inextinguishable flame, the result of an untiring stamina. I will prevail as my parents did when they fled their own homes and theirs before them. My skin has been stretched, torn, shot, and spat at. Yet, although thick, it is soft and warm. So many of us are foreigners everywhere we go in the world. Raised too far away from where we were born to call it home. Born somewhere too different from where we live for us to rest. An African, yet, on earth we fight the feeling that we tress-pass. I am tired but I am happy. For my troubles are my own. And my love, victories, and blessings are worthy.
